This Monday morning, the city of Nouadhibou witnessed a gathering of supporters of businessman Zein El Abidine Ould Sadafa, who planned to hold a protest demanding his release. However, law enforcement intervened to disperse the demonstration.
According to media sources, the police broke up the gathering, prompting protesters to organize a car march through the city’s streets. Participants held signs and chanted slogans calling for justice and the release of Ould Sadafa.
This mobilization follows the decision of the investigating judge of the Sixth Chamber of the Nouakchott-West Court to place Ould Sadafa in detention after his arrest on charges of assaulting journalist Hanefi Ould Dahah.
The public prosecutor charged the businessman with “physical assault that does not meet the conditions for retribution (qisas) or financial compensation (diya),” in accordance with Article 287 of the Mauritanian Penal Code. This article stipulates a prison sentence ranging from ten days to two years, along with a fine between 5,000 and 20,000 old ouguiyas.
This case has drawn significant attention in media and legal circles, with the public closely following its developments amid calls for Ould Sadafa’s release from his supporters and advocates.
