Signing a Cooperation Document between Mauritania and the United States in the Field of Energy and Minerals

In Cape Town, South Africa, on the sidelines of the International Minerals Conference “Indaba”, the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and the United States of America signed a document for cooperation and support in the governance of energy and minerals. The document was signed by the Director General of Minerals and Geology, Mr. Mohamed Yahya Ahmed Zerouq, on behalf of Mauritania, and Mr. Chris Davy on behalf of the American side. This cooperation aims to support the Mauritanian program for the governance of energy and minerals by providing technical assistance, drawing detailed resource maps, supporting the legal framework and the tax system, and offering support in the area of financial incentives to attract investments and mitigate the environmental and social impacts of mining. The United States, through the Bureau of Energy Resources of the U.S. Department of State, will provide support for a better understanding of the vital mineral potentials in Mauritania, especially for minerals involved in energy transition areas such as nickel, chrome, rare earths, cobalt, lithium, and copper.
