The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) of Pakistan has arrested a Pakistani citizen named Mubashar Inayat, accusing him of involvement in a human trafficking network that smuggled Pakistani migrants to Mauritania.
According to Pakistani media, the suspect allegedly received 4.7 million Pakistani rupees from a citizen in exchange for the promise of a job in Spain. However, investigations revealed that the suspect instead sent the victim to Senegal via Mauritania on a visitor visa, where he refused to board a boat bound for Europe.
Investigators also seized a mobile phone and other evidence found in the suspect’s possession as part of broader efforts to dismantle human trafficking networks.
An International Network Under Investigation
Reports also indicate that seven Pakistani survivors of a boat tragedy in Morocco have recently returned home. The tragic incident, which took place in mid-January, resulted in the death of over 40 Pakistani migrants.
A delegation from the FIA traveled to Morocco to interview the survivors and gather information on the smuggling networks involved in their trafficking. The survivors testified about brutal torture at the hands of traffickers and described the inhumane conditions of their journey. They reported that most victims perished due to extreme cold, malnutrition, and lack of drinking water.
According to the survivors, the boat was operated by an international human smuggling network with traffickers based in Senegal, Mauritania, and Morocco. This revelation has led Pakistani authorities to expand their investigation.
Dismantling of a Trafficking Network in Mauritania
On November 26, the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) in Mauritania announced the arrest of a human trafficking network consisting of three Pakistani nationals. The network was planning to smuggle 125 Pakistani migrants to Europe via the Atlantic Ocean.
In an official statement, the DGSN confirmed that the operation was conducted by the Central Office for Combating Illegal Migration and Human Trafficking, in collaboration with Police Station No. 3 in Tevragh Zeina, following extensive surveillance and investigations.
The operation resulted in the arrest of all network members, as well as the 125 illegal migrants, who were preparing to embark on the dangerous journey.
