The Mauritanian Prime Minister’s Office announced an upcoming visit by Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko to Nouakchott, scheduled to begin on Sunday, January 12. This three-day visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations between Mauritania and Senegal in the economic and diplomatic spheres. It marks Prime Minister Sonko’s first official visit to Mauritania since his appointment in the government of Senegalese President Diumay Faye.

Mauritania and Senegal share deep historical and geographical ties that date back centuries. These relations have been reinforced through cultural and social exchanges between the populations of the two nations. Border regions have always been hubs of interaction and trade, fostering strong bonds. Politically, both countries have successfully navigated past crises through dialogue and regional cooperation, exemplified by the Senegal River Basin Development Organization, a symbol of joint efforts to manage shared water resources for sustainable development.

The “Grand Tortue Ahmeyim” gas project is a cornerstone of economic cooperation between Mauritania and Senegal. Located along the maritime border of the two countries, this gas field represents a strategic opportunity to develop the energy sector. The project aims to produce significant quantities of liquefied natural gas, with shared resources and revenues. It underscores a mutual commitment to strengthening economic partnerships and deepening bilateral relations in energy development.

The discussions between the Senegalese Prime Minister and his Mauritanian counterpart are expected to focus on key priorities such as trade enhancement, infrastructure development, and cooperation on regional security challenges. The talks will also address opportunities to advance collaboration in critical sectors like agriculture, fisheries, and energy, serving the shared interests of both nations.

This visit comes at a pivotal time when both countries are seeking to bolster regional cooperation and fully harness their shared resources to drive development. It presents a major opportunity to solidify a long-term strategic partnership between Mauritania and Senegal across various domains.
