On January 7, 2025, the Islamic Republic of Mauritania received substantial aid from the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a U.S. federal institution, amounting to $27 million, equivalent to approximately 1.02 billion Mauritanian Ouguiyas. This funding aims to support Mauritania’s energy sector by developing infrastructure and promoting resilience approaches in development projects.

During 2024, Mauritania benefited from various financial and humanitarian aids from international organizations, notably:

The United States of America:

  • USAID (United States Agency for International Development): Provided $7 million to enhance Mauritania’s capacity to address regional and global challenges.
  • The Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) under the U.S. Department of State: Allocated over $10 million to support refugees in Mauritania, including $5 million for UNHCR to fund an emergency plan for refugees in the Hodh Ech Chargui region.
  • Funding for humanitarian aid programs: Washington announced $536 million for humanitarian programs across Africa, including $184,000 designated for Mauritania to address the needs of Malian refugees.

The World Bank:

  • Health Services Improvement Program: Approved funding of $52.3 million from the International Development Association (IDA), along with a $15 million grant from the Global Financing Facility, to improve health services for approximately 2.5 million people in Mauritania, particularly women, children, and adolescents in remote areas.

The European Union and Spain:

  • Combating Irregular Migration: Allocated over €500 million to assist Mauritania in curbing the influx of irregular migrants to Europe.

These aids represent only a fraction of the broader international support Mauritania receives to strengthen its development programs, particularly in key sectors such as health and education. They are complemented by loans from global economic institutions aimed at enabling the country to achieve its long-term strategic and developmental goals.
