During the opening of the African Energy Summit in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the current President of the African Union (AU), Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, reiterated the Union’s commitment to tackling the continent’s energy challenges. He welcomed the “Mission 300” initiative, launched by the World Bank and the African Development Bank, aimed at providing electricity access to 300 million Africans, highlighting its potential to accelerate development and create jobs.
He reminded attendees that 600 million Africans still lack access to electricity, a major constraint to industrial development and economic growth. The AU is actively working to reduce this energy deficit through initiatives such as the African Single Electricity Market and the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa, while mobilizing financing and strengthening partnerships.
The AU President emphasized that the success of the “Mission 300” project requires significant investments, policy reforms to ensure a stable investment climate, and financial sustainability of electricity companies. He also urged African nations to accelerate the implementation of their national energy commitments and to enhance regional integration in electricity production.
Finally, he called for stronger collaboration between governments, the private sector, and international partners to achieve Africa’s energy goals.
