Scenes shared on social media showed the withdrawal of U.S. forces from their airbase in Niamey, the capital of Niger.
The handover ceremony of Air Base (101) took place on Sunday evening, with U.S. General Kenneth Ekman and Niger's Chief of Staff Maman Sani Kiao signing the transfer of the site to Nigerien authorities.
U.S. Ambassador Kathleen FitzGibbon and several Nigerien military officials attended the ceremony.
AFP reported that the United States has completed the withdrawal of its forces from their airbase in Niamey, the capital of Niger, with 766 American soldiers leaving the country. This withdrawal follows Niger's termination of a military agreement with the United States in March, which included the establishment of a drone base in northern Niger. Nigerien authorities considered the agreement to be imposed and not in the interests of the people. Additionally, the United States must withdraw its forces from the Agadez airbase by September 15. Meanwhile, Russian experts have arrived in Niger to train local forces in counterterrorism, which the Financial Times described as a new strategic victory for Russia.
