The Water Crisis in Nouakchott Amid the Absence of Emergency Plans
The Minister of Water explained that the issue of water shortage is due to the phenomenon of sedimentation. The ministry has been working for a long time to increase production at the Idini and Aftout Essahili stations, as well as desalinating seawater to meet the needs, but we have yet to see concrete results from these measures.
It would have been more appropriate for the ministry, at the very least, to prepare emergency plans to address periods of water shortage, such as creating reserve tanks and distributing water via tankers in critical situations to prevent damage.
What is concerning is that the government might go on its annual vacation while more than a million people in Nouakchott are suffering from the water crisis, and while floods in the interior of the country have caused significant damage to citizens' lives and property.
Autumn has become a nightmare, and the government should remain on constant alert to assist them and consider postponing their vacation until winter.
