Donald Trump threatened on Saturday, in the event of his re-election in the United States, to no longer defend NATO countries that are behind in payments, even going so far as to "encourage" Russia to attack them.
The former American president regularly criticizes his allies from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization for not sufficiently funding the institution. During a rally in South Carolina, Mr. Trump mentioned a conversation with one of the NATO heads of state, without naming them.
“One of the heads of a major country stood up and said, "Well, sir, if we don't pay and are attacked by Russia, will you protect us?", the billionaire recounted before revealing his response: "No, I will not protect you. In fact, I would encourage them to do whatever they want with you. You must pay your debts."
