The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) has released photos showcasing Moroccan female soldiers conducting patrols in the Kanyaruchinya displaced persons camp. These soldiers play a crucial role in enhancing security and protecting civilians affected by conflict. According to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Morocco contributed 1,716 troops to UN peacekeeping operations in 2022, ranking first in the Maghreb region in terms of participation.
Female soldiers bring a vital dimension to these missions, particularly in building trust with displaced populations. Despite significant challenges, such as geopolitical tensions stemming from the Ukrainian crisis and strained relations with host countries, Moroccan forces remain a pivotal player in stabilizing conflict zones. In 2022, the sub-Saharan Africa region saw a 4.2% increase in the number of peacekeepers, reaching approximately 93,000 soldiers, in response to escalating regional conflicts and growing terrorist threats.
