The British capital, London, witnessed a controversial incident on Thursday when a man was violently assaulted after setting fire to a copy of the Quran in front of the Turkish consulate in Knightsbridge.
Videos circulating on the “X” platform show an individual carrying a backpack and holding a burning Quran outside the barriers leading to the Turkish consulate in Rutland Gardens. Shortly after, another man intervened angrily, snatching the sacred book and extinguishing the flames before physically assaulting the perpetrator with kicks and punches. He then brandished a knife and attempted to stab him.
According to reports, police and emergency services quickly arrived at the scene. The man who burned the Quran later claimed responsibility for his act on “X”, stating that he was protesting against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, whom he accused of turning his country into a “base for radical Islamists.” He also revealed that he had traveled to London specifically to carry out the act in tribute to Salwan Momika, an Iraqi man recently shot dead while live-streaming on “TikTok” from his home in Stockholm.
The same individual also posted additional videos showing him burning the Quran and throwing its pages into the toilet.
In an official statement, the British police announced the arrest of the attacker on charges of possessing an offensive weapon and causing serious bodily harm. Meanwhile, the man who burned the Quran was taken to the hospital for a finger injury.
This incident has sparked intense debate between supporters and opponents, reigniting tensions over issues of free speech and the respect for religious symbols.
