Switzerland begins implementing the niqab ban law

Switzerland has banned face coverings in public places, including the niqab and burqa, since January 1, following a 2021 referendum that saw 51.2% of voters approve. The ban also includes football masks and applies across Switzerland, including on the street, in markets and on public transport. The law aims to promote social interaction in line with Swiss values, and will be monitored by local authorities. Violations of the ban are punishable by a fine of between CHF 100 and CHF 1,000.
