Turkish media outlets have reported that Abdullah Ocalan, the leader of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), currently imprisoned in Turkey’s Imrali prison, may issue a call to his party and supporters to lay down their arms in mid-February.
According to the Turkish newspaper “Zaman”, a delegation from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) held a second meeting with Ocalan in prison on Wednesday. The newspaper predicts that this official announcement could be made on February 15.
The report highlights that the meeting addressed various topics, including discussions between the delegation and political parties such as the AKP (Justice and Development Party), the MHP (Nationalist Movement Party), and the CHP (Republican People’s Party). Concerns raised by certain political forces were also discussed. The “Medyascope” website reported that the Kurdish delegation plans to consult government and party representatives after returning from Imrali. If no obstacles arise, a third meeting with Ocalan is expected, during which he may formally call for the PKK to end its armed struggle.
The choice of February 15 is significant, coinciding with the anniversary of Ocalan’s extradition to Turkey. The leader of the MHP, Devlet Bahçeli, suggested that Ocalan could make this announcement via Parliament, but legal constraints seem to favor an announcement directly from Imrali prison.
