The Mauritanian government has announced the beginning of a new phase of “economic development” with the launch of production and export of liquefied natural gas from the first phase of the “Grand Tortue Ahmeyim” (GTA) project in February.
During the presentation of his government’s action plan to the National Assembly on Friday, Mauritanian Prime Minister Mokhtar Ould Ajay stated that the project aims to utilize natural gas to produce electricity for domestic needs, with the surplus to be exported to strengthen the national economy.
The Prime Minister also mentioned that electricity purchase agreements with the Mauritanian Electricity Company (SOMELEC) and the National Industrial and Mining Company (SNIM) are expected to be signed this year, which will enhance the country’s energy infrastructure.
By the end of 2024, the long-anticipated dream of gas production, which had been in the works for years, began to materialize with the announcement of the first gas extraction from the “Grand Tortue Ahmeyim” field, a joint project between Mauritania and Senegal.
The Prime Minister further stated that the government will continue its efforts to market its oil and gas resources, focusing on the development of the “Bir Allah” field and activating agreements signed with interested companies for this promising resource.
