France has officially started its military withdrawal from Senegal by transferring control of two bases located in Maréchal and Saint-Exupéry to the Senegalese government, in accordance with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s decision to expel all foreign forces. A joint French-Senegalese committee has been established to oversee the process, and 162 Senegalese employees working at the French bases have been dismissed.
This withdrawal is part of a broader shift in France’s military strategy in Africa. Countries like Chad and Senegal are ending long-standing defense agreements with Paris, while others such as Gabon and Côte d’Ivoire are adopting a new model based on shared military sites under full local authority, replacing permanent French military bases.
