Members of the U.S. House of Representatives have introduced a proposal aimed at allowing former President Donald Trump to seek a third term in office.
The resolution, presented by Republican Andy Ogles from Tennessee, proposes amending the U.S. Constitution to increase the maximum number of presidential terms to three, provided that the terms are not consecutive. The draft states that “no person shall be elected to the office of President more than three times, nor be re-elected for two consecutive terms.”
If adopted, this amendment would enable Trump to run for a third term in 2028, as he failed to secure re-election for a second term in 2020. At the same time, the proposal would prevent former presidents such as Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama—who each served two consecutive terms—from running again.
In a statement, Ogles emphasized the importance of the amendment, saying: “It is critical to provide President Trump with all the tools necessary to correct the disastrous course set by the administration of former President Joe Biden.”
However, the news outlet “Axios” noted that the likelihood of this resolution passing is very slim. It would require approval from two-thirds of lawmakers in both chambers of Congress, as well as ratification by 38 states to amend the U.S. Constitution.
The report also highlighted that the mere introduction of such a proposal demonstrates the “deep loyalty” to Trump among some members of the House of Representatives.
It is worth noting that, according to the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, adopted in 1951, no individual can be elected president more than twice consecutively or non-consecutively.
