The Wall Street Journal has reported that China has proposed, through intermediaries, to host a summit between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. This initiative aims to facilitate peace efforts following a ceasefire in Ukraine.
According to the newspaper, Chinese officials have submitted this proposal in recent weeks, emphasizing that the meeting would be strictly between Moscow and Washington, without the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
However, the Chinese proposal has been met with skepticism in the United States and Europe, as Western countries fear that this initiative could further strengthen the close ties between Beijing and Moscow, solidifying their strategic alliance.
The report also states that Chinese President Xi Jinping does not want his involvement in resolving the Ukraine conflict to harm China’s strong relations with Russia, highlighting Beijing’s cautious approach to this sensitive issue.
Additionally, the Chinese proposal does not include any commitments from Beijing to reduce its economic cooperation with Moscow, raising questions about how China intends to balance its relations between the conflicting parties.
