In another development, a group of Malian migrants protested at a Mauritanian police checkpoint near the Gougui border post following their expulsion. They set fire to the checkpoint tent and seized police phones. These events follow a wave of expulsions of irregular migrants carried out by the authorities, who reiterated their openness to legal immigration.
The Mauritanian authorities confirmed their commitment to respecting international agreements in the fight against irregular migration, while the government spokesperson stated that the migrants had made no effort to regularize their situation.
