Israeli Ministers of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, have commented on U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to lift the sanctions imposed by the Biden administration on settlers who committed acts of violence against Palestinians in the West Bank. Ben Gvir described Trump’s decision as a “correction of a long-standing injustice,” emphasizing that the removal of sanctions marks a historic step towards achieving justice.

In his remarks, Smotrich expressed his gratitude to President Trump for his “fair decision” to lift the sanctions imposed by the Biden administration on settlers and activists within right-wing organizations accused of perpetrating violence against Palestinians. He affirmed that this decision reflects the American administration’s commitment to balancing regional issues equitably.

While Trump’s actions may give the impression that he is determined to end conflicts in the Middle East, this stance does not stem from compassion for the Palestinians. Instead, it is motivated by his desire to portray himself as a global peacemaker. This approach starkly contrasts with his predecessor, who became entangled in seemingly endless conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, exacerbating rather than alleviating tensions.

During his first term, Trump worked diligently to position himself as a peace broker in the Middle East, significantly contributing to the establishment of the Abraham Accords. These agreements normalized relations between Israel and several Arab nations, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan. Trump’s efforts in orchestrating these accords were part of his broader strategy to secure international recognition as a mediator of peace. Despite his intensive efforts, Trump did not receive the Peace Prize, a recognition he had sought through his diplomatic initiatives.

These statements come amid ongoing efforts to achieve a temporary calm in the region and reduce tensions between the involved parties. However, relying on negotiated deals instead of comprehensive political solutions highlights the limitations of Israeli strategies in achieving lasting peace and stability. This reliance leaves the region in a state of persistent tension and conflict.

This initiative is considered a significant step toward achieving some level of stability and security in the region. Nevertheless, it also raises new questions about the effectiveness of Israeli policies and their role in perpetuating the conflict. While Trump aims to enhance his image as a global peace mediator through these humanitarian initiatives, Israel continues to face substantial challenges in gaining international trust and establishing genuine peace, moving away from dependence on agreements that may not be sustainable in the long term.
