UN Adopts Resolutions for Ceasefire in Gaza and Support for UNRWA

The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution calling for an immediate, unconditional, and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, along with the release of all hostages. The resolution was supported by 158 countries, while 9 voted against it and 13 abstained.

Another resolution reaffirmed the UN's full support for UNRWA and condemned Israeli legislation passed on October 28, 2024, which threatens the agency's role in aiding Palestinian refugees.

Since the Israeli war on Gaza began on October 7, 2023, over 45,000 people have been killed and 107,000 injured, the majority of whom are women and children. Additionally, more than 10,000 individuals remain missing.

The UN Security Council previously failed to adopt a similar resolution due to a US veto, as the US continues to block initiatives aimed at ending the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
