Iranian President Massoud Bezhkian stated that before implementing new hijab laws, discussions must take place to "preserve our religious values without harming the unity and cohesion of society."
In September 2023, the Iranian Parliament passed a bill increasing prison sentences and fines for women and girls who violate strict dress codes.
The penalties include prison sentences of up to 10 years for wearing "inappropriate" clothing, flogging, and fines of up to 360 million Iranian rials (more than $8,500). The sanctions also include travel restrictions and denial of internet access.
