Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized actions by Israeli settlers who assaulted senior army officers, including Major General Avi Blot, commander of the central region, during his visit to Hebron in the occupied West Bank on Friday.
According to the Israeli army, a group of settlers obstructed General Blot and other officers, preventing them from leaving and hurling insults at them. The police reported the arrest of five individuals involved in the incident.
In an official statement, the Prime Minister’s office emphasized the need to address all forms of violence against soldiers and officers with the full force of the law.
During his visit to Hebron for an annual religious event, General Blot was called a "traitor" by some settlers. In a separate incident near the settlement of Itamar, dozens of settlers, some masked, threw stones at police and border guards on Saturday.
Certain extremist settler groups reject the authority of the Israeli army over areas they consider under their control, further fueling tensions in the region.
