Arrest of Foreigners in Protests Against Mauritanian Election Results

Mauritanian Interior Minister Mohamed Ahmed Ould Mohamed El Amine announced that security forces arrested foreigners during the riots that erupted in some cities to protest the results of the June 29 elections. The minister stated that the detainees did not carry identification documents and that an investigation is ongoing to determine the routes through which they entered the country. He also announced the release of some detainees and that the security forces plan to release others. Constitutional Council Sets August 1 for the Inauguration of President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani for a Second Term

The Constitutional Council announced that the inauguration of President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani for his second term will take place on August 1. The Council's Secretary-General confirmed that the second term will begin on August 2, after the current term ends on July 31. Ould Ghazouani assumed office on August 1, 2019, for a five-year term. The Council confirmed his victory in the June 29 elections with 56.12% of the vote. No appeals were filed with the Constitutional Council by the presidential candidates, as the results matched those announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Tewassoul Party: We Did Not Have Sufficient Evidence to Contest the Presidential Election Results

Mohamed El Amin Ould Cheyeb, a leader of the National Rally for Reform and Development "Tewassoul" Party, announced that the party did not file appeals against the presidential election results after consulting legal experts. He indicated that the irregularities observed would not affect the overall results. The party decided to continue with the electoral process to improve the electoral system, even though the elections did not meet the required transparency criteria. Mauritanian coastguards recovered the bodies of 89 clandestine migrants after a traditional fishing boat ran aground off the coast of Njago. Nine people, including a five-year-old girl, were rescued. The boat, which had left the Senegalese-Gambian borders six days ago, was carrying 170 migrants heading to Europe.
