Immigration from Mauritania: A boat full of migrants is discovered off the coast of Brazil

Fishermen in Brazil spotted a small boat filled with decomposing bodies off the coast of the northeastern state of Pará last Saturday. In this context, the Brazilian Public Prosecutor's Office announced that it had sent a team of forensic experts to the site to determine the source of the bodies and the boat. Initial reports indicated that the boat may have come from Mauritania, and may contain up to twenty bodies. The office confirmed its intention to open a criminal investigation into the incident. It should be noted that Mauritania has become a major starting point for migrants wishing to reach the Canary Islands since the beginning of the year, despite existing agreements between Nouakchott and Madrid to combat irregular migration. This situation raises concerns for the Spanish and European authorities, as Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen promised during their visit to Mauritania in February to provide financial assistance amounting to 200 million euros to help control these flights.
