Today, the preacher Khadija bint Sidi Mohamed delivered a lecture in The first episode of the lecture series on marriage. She began the lesson by emphasizing the importance of the foundations and various motivations for marriage, such as religion, natural instinct, parental approval, pursuit of wealth, status, mutual benefit, kinship, or personal desire.
She explained that marriage is not merely a contract but a sacred covenant, revered by Islamic law and mentioned in the Quran as a symbol of the bond and commitment between spouses. She also noted that divorce often results from a lack of patience and the absence of appropriate solutions to marital problems.
She also discussed the Quranic verse that states: "And among His signs is that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has placed love and mercy between you." She emphasized that God Almighty has made love and mercy the fundamental pillars for sustaining marital life.
She also spoke about the necessity of choosing the right partner, referring to a hadith of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, which advises a man to see the woman before marriage to ensure there is attraction and compatibility between them. However, she emphasized that superficial attachment should not be the foundation, as attraction without mutual appreciation and understanding can lead to the failure of a marriage.
Then, she quoted a hadith that teaches us that marriage should be based on religion and character, not just on beauty, wealth, or lineage. She cited the hadith: "A woman may be married for four things: her wealth, her family status, her beauty, and her religion. So choose the one with religion, may your hands be dusted." This means that religion should be the most important factor in choosing a partner, to ensure the building of a stable and happy family.
Preacher Khadija stated that achieving family stability and building a successful marital relationship requires more than just physical attraction or material interests. The relationship must be built on a strong foundation of affection, mercy, and mutual respect, which makes the marriage sustainable and strengthens the bonds between spouses in the face of life's challenges.
She illustrated this point with an example about a companion who went to Umar ibn al-Khattab, may God be pleased with him, mentioning that he no longer felt desire towards his wife. Umar responded wisely, explaining that marriage is not based solely on romantic love, but also rests on affection, tranquility, and mercy, which are more sustainable foundations for marital relationships.
Khadija explained that marriage is a complementary partnership that contributes to the balance and personal growth of both parties. She emphasized the importance of patience and understanding in overcoming the challenges that couples may face, stressing the need for continuous effort to strengthen and develop the relationship.
At the conclusion of the episode, the preacher invited viewers to reflect on their intentions and goals regarding marriage, and to strive for a deeper understanding and awareness of religious and ethical considerations in choosing a life partner. She encouraged finding a partner who shares the same values and principles, one who can be a true companion in life's journey, not only in good times but also in facing crises and challenges together.
With these tips, preacher Khadija bint Sidi Mohamed aims to inspire viewers not just to seek love, but to build strong and sustainable marital relationships based on respect and mutual understanding, emphasizing that this is the path to true happiness and family stability.
