His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, left Nouakchott early this Saturday morning, heading to Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, to participate in the commemoration of the thirtieth anniversary of one of the darkest atrocities in recent history: the genocide against the Tutsis in 1994. This event, which witnessed the tragic loss of approximately 800,000 lives in just a few months, remains a poignant testament to the devastating consequences of conflicts and civil wars.

This year's commemoration holds special significance, not only for the Rwandan people but for the entire world, as a necessary reminder of the dangers of ethnic hatred and the importance of peace and reconciliation. The French President's acknowledgment that France, along with its partners, could have prevented this genocide highlights the importance of international vigilance and intervention to prevent massacres.

The Rwandan Genocide in 1994 serves as a grim reminder of what unchecked hatred can lead to. In just a few months, hundreds of thousands of Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed in an organized campaign of violence, highlighting the fragility of human coexistence and the urgent need for international solidarity and conflict prevention.

Reflecting on this painful past is crucial for understanding the dynamics that lead to civil wars and genocides. This includes identifying early warning signs, such as incitement to ethnic hatred, political polarization, and the collapse of the rule of law, and establishing mechanisms to counter them before they escalate into violence.

After the commemoration, it is crucial to learn from these events. The international community must intensify its efforts to prevent future catastrophes by promoting peace, justice, and reconciliation, supporting dialogue initiatives between communities, and intervening decisively when there is evidence of tensions that could lead to violence.

In remembering the Rwandan Genocide, we honor not only the victims but also the survivors who have rebuilt their lives and their country with remarkable resilience. This should inspire us all to work towards a world that celebrates differences, where justice prevails, and such acts of violence are never repeated.

President Ghazouani's participation in this commemoration underscores Mauritania's and the international community's commitment to remembering and learning from the horrors of the past. Together, by remaining vigilant against the forces of division and working towards peace, we can hope to avoid the mistakes of the past and build a better future for all.
