Macky Sall, the outgoing president of Senegal, whose term ends on April 2nd, is not remaining inactive and is actively preparing for his future international responsibilities. He has been appointed as a special envoy for the Paris Agreement for People and the Planet (4P) by Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, and will assume his duties immediately after the end of his presidential term.

During a video conference this morning with the French President, discussions between Macky Sall and the 4P secretariat focused on the agenda and challenges awaiting the former Senegalese president in his new role. This appointment comes at a critical moment, just after the conclusion of his twelve-year presidency in Senegal, which was capped off by the March 24 elections that resulted in the election of Bassirou Diomaye Faye as his successor.

It's important to note that Macky Sall's initial desire to postpone the presidential elections had tarnished his image. However, his respect for the Constitutional Council's decision and the smooth conduct of the presidential elections not only rebuilt his reputation but also strengthened Senegal's position on the international stage as a bastion of democracy. The example of Senegalese democracy could extend across the entire continent, representing a significant lesson that the Senegalese have offered to Africa.

The transfer of power between Macky Sall and Bassirou Diomaye Faye is scheduled for April 2, 2024, opening a new chapter for both Senegal and Macky Sall on the international stage.
