2024: Dozens of Journalists Killed Worldwide, Most in Gaza, Calls for Enhanced Protection

اReports from "Reporters Without Borders" and the International Federation of Journalists highlight a tragic year for media professionals in 2024. According to "Reporters Without Borders," 54 journalists were killed while performing their duties, 18 of them by Israeli forces—16 in Gaza and 2 in Lebanon. Palestine has been identified as the most dangerous country for journalists over the past five years.

The International Federation of Journalists provides a higher toll, reporting 104 journalists killed globally in 2024, more than half of them in Gaza. The conflict in Gaza is described as the deadliest for journalists in 30 years, with 68 deaths in this context alone.

Other fatalities occurred in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Mexico. Israel disputes the figures, claiming it only targets military objectives.

The Federation calls for global standards to protect journalists and for stronger accountability mechanisms, noting that nearly 400 media professionals are currently imprisoned worldwide.
