After being referred for investigation, the investigating judge in the region of Nouakchott Ouest ordered the imprisonment of the president of the Transparency Mauritania organization, Mohamed Ould Ghaddé. This move came in light of accusations leveled against Ghaddé related to "defamation and slander," in addition to accusing him of spreading false information online with the aim of tarnishing the reputation of a local company.
The public prosecutor's office in the region of Nouakchott Ouest has filed a request to refer Mohamed Ould Ghaddé to prison based on the charges against him, after he appeared before them following a complaint filed by BIS-TP company, a subsidiary of a Mauritanian businessman.
It is worth noting that Transparency Mauritania, led by Ould Ghaddé, had accused the mentioned company of committing acts of corruption and misappropriating funds through incomplete public projects.
For reference, this is not the first time Ould Ghaddé has faced similar charges, as he was previously arrested under similar accusations during the tenure of the former president.
The Senate played a pivotal role in the constitutional amendments crisis that erupted in Mauritania after the government's proposal in March 2017. Despite the government suggesting a solution involving the dissolution of the Senate as well as changing the flag and national anthem, the Senate rejected passing these amendments.
This incident comes amid escalating controversy surrounding corruption issues, and it is expected that this judicial decision will provoke a wide-ranging reaction within the political and civil spheres of our country, against the backdrop of significant stakes related to the enhancement of democracy and the rule of law in the nation.
