The new Senegalese President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, conducted a friendship and working visit to Mauritania, which is his first outside the country since taking office. During the one-day visit, he held discussions with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Sheikh Ghazouani on ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in various fields. These topics were discussed in the presence of a prominent Senegalese delegation and a number of Mauritanian ministers, demonstrating the strong relationship between the two countries.

This visit comes in the context of efforts to deepen strategic ties and regional cooperation between the two countries, especially after the election of Bassirou Diomai Fay as President of Senegal. President Faye, who took office in March 2024, seeks to consolidate his country's relations with its neighbors and strengthen Senegal's role in international and regional forums.

The discussions that took place in Nouakchott also included discussions on common challenges such as regional security and economic development, with a focus on sectors such as fishing and the maritime economy, processing and transportation, along with other topics of common interest.

During the discussions between the two presidents, the exploitation of the joint gas field between Senegal and Mauritania was also discussed, which is one of the most prominent economic projects between the two countries. The field offers great opportunities for cooperation in the field of energy, and is considered a model for regional cooperation that can contribute to enhancing economic growth and improving energy security in both countries.

The joint exploitation of the Senegal River is another example of successful cooperation between the two countries. The Senegal River, which runs through several countries in the region, provides valuable water resources that are used for irrigation, power generation and navigation. Joint management of these resources reflects the desire to make the most of natural infrastructure in a way that benefits everyone.

The two countries' commitment to promoting these joint projects demonstrates deep and continuing cooperation, which represents a vital part of their bilateral relations. These projects not only benefit in strengthening economic relations between Senegal and Mauritania, but also contribute to achieving sustainable development and improving the living standards of the peoples of the region.

At the end of the visit, the two presidents expressed their commitment to joint work for peace and stability in the region, and progress towards achieving sustainable development goals that are in the interest of their peoples.
