Israel Offers Hamas a New Proposal on Hostage Deal and Ceasefire

According to Israeli sources, Tel Aviv has presented Hamas with an updated proposal aimed at releasing some of the remaining hostages and establishing a ceasefire in Gaza. Israel hopes that international pressure, the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, and the involvement of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump will facilitate the stalled negotiations since August.

The proposal includes releasing all detained women and men over 50 years old in critical medical conditions, in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, some serving life sentences for killing Israelis. Israel has reduced the number of hostages it demands to be freed, citing assessments that some may no longer be alive.

Egypt has assumed the role of the primary mediator, while Qatar’s involvement has lessened. The updated framework proposes a ceasefire lasting between 42 and 60 days. Recent discussions between Israeli and Egyptian officials focused on implementing the first phase of the agreement.
