The Cabinet met today, Wednesday, August 21, 2024, under the chairmanship of His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, President of the Republic.
The Council reviewed and approved a draft law repealing and replacing Law No. 2018-034 of August 8, 2018, which outlines the statutes of the Central Bank of Mauritania.
The draft law aims to reform the statutes of the Central Bank of Mauritania and adapt the regulatory framework to the new requirements of the current economic and technological context. This update is essential to strengthen the Central Bank's independence, ensure financial stability, respond to technological developments, and frame the supervision of the emerging financial market infrastructure in Mauritania.
The Council also reviewed and approved the following draft decrees:
– Draft decree appointing the Chairman and members of the Board of Directors of the Mauritanian Authority for Quality Assurance in Higher Education.
– Draft decree appointing the members of the Board of Directors of the Mauritanian Hydrocarbons Company.
– Draft decree appointing the Chairman and members of the Board of Directors of the Mauritanian Authority for Quality Assurance in Higher Education.
– Draft decree appointing the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Road Maintenance Works Agency.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad presented a report on the international situation.
The Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs, along with the Acting Minister of the Interior, Decentralization, and Local Development, presented a report on the internal situation.
The Minister of Energy and Petroleum and the Minister of Economy and Finance presented a joint report concerning support measures for the implementation of the restructuring of the company SOMELEC.
This report presents the overall situation of SOMELEC as of December 31, 2023, and its status as of June 30, 2024. It proposes measures to ensure service continuity, improve technical and financial performance, and define the appropriate mechanisms for new companies to carry out their missions while maintaining their balance.
