The Hebrew newspaper "Maariv" reports that recent polls conducted in Britain carry bad news for Israel, showing a "massive collapse" of the Conservative Party, contrasted by a "historic majority" that the Labour Party is set to achieve.
The elections are set to take place in Britain in one month and are expected to bring about a radical change that could completely transform the country's political landscape, according to "Maariv". The newspaper refers to a poll conducted by the "YouGov" agency and published in Britain, which predicts that the Labour Party will secure a historic victory with a majority that no British party has achieved since 1924.
According to "Maariv", if these predictions hold true, the expected leader of Britain starting next month will be the Labour Party's leader, Keir Starmer, a lawyer who has devoted much of his career to fighting for human rights and entered the UK political arena in 2015, being elected as Labour leader in 2020.
The newspaper notes that Starmer's stance towards Jews and Israel is sympathetic. His wife, Victoria Alexander, is Jewish, and the couple raises their two children in the Jewish faith and also has relatives in Israel.
However, "Maariv" mentions that Starmer's position regarding the ongoing "Iron Swords" war in the Gaza Strip since October 7 has evolved over time. At the start of the war and until February, Starmer supported Israel's right to defend itself and countered voices within his party calling for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. But in February, there was a shift in his stance when he stated that "the fighting must stop now," and since then, he has been calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
