The United States Department of State has expressed its concern over the postponement of the presidential election in Senegal, initially scheduled for February 25, 2024, considering this action as a breach of the country’s strong democratic tradition. In a press release relayed by Senego and dated February 6, 2024, spokesperson Matthew Miller highlighted reports of the forceful expulsion of parliamentarians opposing a bill to delay the election, questioning the legitimacy of the vote within the National Assembly. The United States calls on Senegal to promptly organize the presidential election in accordance with its Constitution and electoral laws, to immediately restore Internet access, and to ensure the freedoms of peaceful assembly and expression, including for members of the press. They emphasize their intention to continue dialogue with all parties and regional partners to resolve the situation.
